She is well known for her correspondence with Pope Gregory XI who, at her urging, returned the papacy to Rome after 70 years of exile in Avignon. Catherine was devoted to the Eucharist. She lived in intimate communion with Jesus, gave herself tirelessly for His Church, and died spent on April 29, 1380, at the age of 33. Canonized in 1461, Pope Saint Paul VI declared her a Doctor of the Church in 1970, and Pope Saint John Paul II proclaimed her Co-Patroness of Europe in 1999. St. Catherine of Siena testifies to the fruitfulness of an active life grounded in prayer and the Sacraments. This biography is written by Bl. Raymond of Capua, her confessor and spiritual director.
